Herb of the Month-Acai Berry

Botanical Name: Medicago sativa L.
Common Name: Acai Berry

What's It Used For?

Similar to red wine, research shows that acai berries are extremely high in anthocyanins, a form of plant antioxidant associated with the ability to lower cholesterol levels in the blood stream. They are also rich in plant sterols that provide cardio-protective benefits to our cells. It does this by preventing blood clots, improving overall blood circulation, and relaxing the blood vessels.

Herbal Healing Salve:

Ingredients - 1½ ounce each:

  1. lavender flowers
  2. calendula
  3. St. John’s
  4. chickweed

Instructions:

Combine all herbs and completely cover with olive oil – having 1 inch of oil above the herbs. Turn oven on 170 degrees – if your oven doesn’t go this low – put on the lowest setting and leave the door open.  Warm oil for 4-6 hours. Strain oil using cheese cloth, or muslin.  Put oil in a small saucepan designated for herbal use.  Add ¾ - 1 ounce of grated beeswax to 1 cup of oil.  Keep on low setting and stir often. Once the beeswax is melted, immediately pour into salve containers.  You can use metal tins, glass jars, or plastic jars. Add 1 drop of lavender essential oil to each container and swirl with toothpick. Leave lids off until cooled.
